Changed Your Mind About What You Want to Be When You Grow Up - When I Grow Up

Changed Your Mind About What You Want to Be When You Grow Up - When I Grow Up For serious, Kat McBride is just one of my favorite people. Not only is she an amazeballs artist (no, she doesnt just do portraits she does superhero portraits mermaid portraits!) that made my family cry happy-tears when I gifted them with her work, not only is she an amazeballs teacher (if you think you cant draw, shell prove you otherwise), but now she wrote this. So proud youre reading it here first! Original picture by Kat You thought you had it all figured out, the passion, the drive, the energy, and plan after plan. 5 year plans, Effective Escapes, business plans, fiscal plans; youve got em. Then it hits you â€" you want to be something else. You want to be a this AND There is a piece missing something you didnt account for in your planning. Dont you know that Im an Artist? I knew since I was 12 that I wanted to be an artist. I wanted to make art that would move people, stir something in their souls, like the next Frida Kahlo and Monet rolled into one. I was born to be an artist. While in art college I kept a part time job at the local arts’n’crafts store and during the summer I drew the short straw to host the budding artist summer camps. Imagine: a 10x15 room packed sardine-full of kids, ages 6-16. I thought that I was a Fine Artist at the time, poised to create the next great masterpiece of our time. To say I was grouchy about teaching this room full of kids, babysitting, an understatement. Our activities guide that was full of hackneyed and out-dated craft projects for foam-stickered jewelry boxes and pony-beaded bracelets. (Perfect for a teen boy, not.) That first lesson was hard. Beaded bracelets for the little ones, birdhouse painting projects for the older ones. A chorus of “Im booooooooooooooooored.” Plus a few, this is stupids. And, ugh, “youre the worst art teacher ever.” Well, What do you want to learn? Ooooh no. I knew what bad art teachers were like, I had my share of them. I knew what an amazing difference a great art teacher could mean in the life of a budding artist. ”What do you want to learn?” I asked. Cue The Price is Right fail noise, right now. They didnt know. It was summer, what kid wants to learn anything during summer vacation? How can you know the answer to a question youve never thought about? I peppered them with questions we were in this thing for 2 weeks and the preplanned activities were more of the (boring and stupid) crafts from earlier, I was not going to add Worst Teacher Ever, June 2003, to my imaginary resume. We fumbled together, sometimes I just drew things that they asked me and they tried to copy the image. “What do you really like?” Then I would draw it. I would break it down, step-by-step on a white board or a piece of poster board and we would redraw it together. “Ill never be as good as you. Im not an artist.” Came a voice from the back. (I think this sentiment is BS, no matter your age, beteedubs. The only reason you are not an artist is because you stopped being an artist as a child. Someone judged your work too harshly, and killed the creative kid that loved the smell of a new box of crayons. Solution? New box of crayons. The big one.) We started over. I hacked the curriculum that I knew from art schoolâ€" figure drawing and still life, shading and color theory, stippling, line width, how to properly load a brush, perspective. Every child, every age, and a few parents a little ways into the classes, followed the lessons. I always thought I wanted to be an Artist. An artist; thats it, period, end of story, thank you very much. I didnt go into the classroom seeking to innovate. It was my turn to take what was usually the most hated chore in the store. (Seriously, cleaning bathrooms was more favored among our crew.) After 7 years of knowing deep in my bones that I was destined to be an artist when I grew up, something shifted that summer. There were more classes: we developed a Crash Course to Anime class, and a Totally UnBoring Still Life for Kids class, a week long calligraphy class, a Prismacolor Pencils Primer, and a Sharpie Marker Sneaker workshop. I wasnt just a teacher, I was a parent-kid liaison. I was a marketing/networking/coordination machine (although I had no idea at the time what the heck marketing or networking were.) I was a product tester, craft demonstrator, project engineer, and creative maven. More of my days were scheduled in the classroom as an activities director than they were out on the floor as a cashier or stock girl. But that summer I stopped being an artist and starting being an Artist And _. Minimum wage clerk but a well-loved art teacher and artist. And, But, and Or will get you pretty far. So, what do you do if you planned your entire life around being one thing, one type of person, one career? Life isnt over, you shift, you pivot, you add it all together, and you work with it. And sometimes it happens accidentally, and you love it. 3 Kat Kat is an avid artist, creative maven, mom, and teacher. She is definitely a painting zealot, an art enabler, and a creative catalyst. She loves chai, candy-colored paint, new brushes, karaoke, and nerding out about creativity. She shares art, tutorials, and true stories about the intersection of artist + mom over at KatCanPaint.com

Heres What Americans Would Sacrifice for a 10% Pay Raise

Here's What Americans Would Sacrifice for a 10% Pay Raise More than a third of Americans would give up their right to vote for a 10% annual pay raise, according to a new survey. Pause for a second to let that sink in. The peculiar findings come from a survey conducted by LendEDU, an online student loan marketplace, that polled 1,238 working Americans. In exchange for the hypothetical pay bump, about 35% of these employees said they would sacrifice their voting rights for life. In addition, just over 9% of respondents said they would give up their children’s (or future children’s) right to vote for life for the make-believe raise. But those aren’t the only big sacrifices the respondents would make for a 10% annual salary increase. More than 12% said they would break up with their partners, and nearly 19% said they would give up their health insurance for the next five years. Forty percent would forfeit their dental care for five years for a raise, and nearly 18% would say goodbye to their Social Security benefits. Other concessions would greatly impact an employee’s life at work. More than 55% of those surveyed said they would work an extra 10 hours each week for the raise. More than 15% said they would give up all vacation days for five years, and more than 50% said they would work a weekend day for a year. Putting these results in context, just 5% of those surveyed would eat one Tide pod for the raise. (Apparently some Americans believe eating a Tide pod would do more damage than losing their voting rights for life.) Some of the other propositions appeared more realistic â€" or, at least, not contradictory to decades of human rights activism and voting rights legislation. More than 73% of those surveyed said they would give up all alcoholic drinks for the next five years, and more than 50% would not watch a single movie for three years. And, sorry HBO, but more than 88% of workers would choose to never watch Game of Thrones again to earn the raise. In defense of those surveyed, a significant annual raise is hard to come by these days. More companies now are lowering the annual percentage pay bump and nixing yearly performance reviews altogether. As a result of President Donald Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, employees at certain companies earned bonuses, and, in some cases, higher salaries for minimum wage employees. A one-time bonus is easier to pull off than a salary increase â€" and ideally boosts moral. But, of course, with a third of American workers willing to give up their voting rights for a 10% annual pay increase, a bonus is not enough. The LendEDU findings may also come as a result of years of slow wage growth. Additionally, the federal minimum wage still sits at $7.25 an hour, though some states like California, Washington, Vermont and New York, among others, have enacted higher minimum wages. But if you were to forfeit your voting rights to get that raise, you wouldn’t be able to have an impact on this cause, among many others related to your job.

Promotion Killers Sloppy Work - Work It Daily

Promotion Killers Sloppy Work - Work It Daily Your work says a lot about you. Clean, complete work defines you as a professional, someone worthy of a promotion. Messy, incomplete work defines you as someone who doesn’t care â€" and not worthy of a promotion. I always advise my coaching clients to sweat the small stuff. It’s the small stuff, the details, that helps you create a professional image. Make sure your e-mails are well written and grammatically correct. Read them, don’t just spell check them. Practice your presentations before you give them â€" out loud. Anticipate questions you’ll get in a presentation and bring back up information with you so you can answer those questions. Your work is a reflection of you. It can show that you care, or that you’re just getting by. If you want to get promoted, demonstrate that you care by the quality of your work. Good enough is never good enough. Make all of your work the best it can be. Your Next Step If your job search isn't moving as quickly as you want, it's time to take action. The Future is Carly Montecalvo College Senior and Social Media Changemaker

The Future is Carly Montecalvo College Senior and Social Media Changemaker Carly Montecalvo, a senior Communications major at St. Josephs University in Philadelphia, came to school knowing she wanted to make a difference. Now, after being elected President of the SJU chapter of the American Marketing Association, Montecalvo is using zu sich digital marketing skills to assist local non-profits. As a Foley Fellow for The Beautiful Social Research Collaborative (BSocial), she leads teams of students who develop digital media deliverables for community partners.Montecalvo recently shared how BSocial is making a difference, her largest accomplishment at the organization, and what advice she has for young women looking to be leaders on their campuses. How are you making an impact on your local community?I am a Foley Fellow for BSocial, a civic media research collaborative at Saint Josephs University. This program works with non-profit partners in the Philadelphia area and beyond by creating digital stories, building web sites, and conducting social media analyses, all free of charge. As a Fellow, I act as a liaison between the community partners and student consultants within the program.Every semester I am challenged with a new research question, community partner, and group of student consultants who create communication deliverables that go beyond just a school project. This program gives myself the space to make mistakes, get frustrated, laugh, grow, and learn, all while staying true to the authentic core of creating positive social change. What made you passionate about BSocial? My short-term goal is to make a difference my long-term goal is to sustain this difference. BSocial is an organization that aligns these two purposes and allows me to positively influence the communities Im part of both my school and my city. Whether it is change in a society, an institution, a group of people, or a single individual, this organizations vision comes to life with each and e very project we complete. How did you get in this position?Beautiful Social welches one of the reasons I chose to come to Saint Josephs University. I was really drawn to the idea of communication for social good, and this ultimately became the determining factor for my college decision. If a program like this was housed in the Communications Department, I knew that this major would be the perfect fit for me. With this driving force to become involved in the program as soon as possible, I made sure to take the course as soon as I could. After a meaningful experience in the classroom, I knew I wanted to be a part of the program as a leader to facilitate this same opportunity for more students. After a semester in the course, I applied for the Fellowship, interviewed, and was chosen. I know that BSocial has made such an impact on my college experience, and I truly could elend imagine my time at SJU without it.What other activities, projects, or jobs do you do at school?Im currently the President of the American Marketing Association at SJU, as well as a contributor to the Hawk Newspaper. Im a member of Alpha Gamma Delta and I volunteer at the Eye Institute of the Sacred Heart, which provides medical supplies to clinics in Peru. Ive also studied abroad in Denmark and South Africa, where I was a foreign correspondent for our school paper covering social justice issues. What is an accomplishment youre proud of?As a part of Womens History Month through our schools Office of Inclusion and Diversity, I organized a Womens Panel on behalf of Beautiful Social to contribute to the months celebration Womens Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations. I invited female leaders who worked with nonprofits for a conversation around women in the workplace and leadership. This was something that felt out of my comfort zone. Would anyone show up? Would a positive conversation arise? This event forced me to stay uncomfortable in my position as a Fellow, and continue to challenge myself with new opportunities that contribute to our campus community. The event had a great outcome, with guests contributing in such candid and intentional conversations with the women leaders in an intimate setting. I am beyond proud of the events success, but more importantly that the individuals leaving the room left with such a feeling of empowerment. What is a challenge that youve faced and overcome as a fellow?I have experienced many challenges when it comes to managing groups of student consultants in BSocial. Different group member personalities, sometimes difficult clients, and the constant fear of not finishing a project are all obstacles that quite frequently occur. What advice do you have for women who want to make a difference at their school?Do it. If you have an idea, a full plan, or just a small thought and if you want to make a difference do it without a second thought. There are no rules to your creativity or boundaries for your ideas, just a risk waiting to be taken. The b est advice I could give is to have confidence in yourself that you are setting out to make a difference with the purest of intentions. Believe that you can do it, and if you cant, believe in yourself enough to try again.Who is YOUR Fairygodboss? Why?When I think of a woman who listens with such intent, leads by example, is the hardest worker in the room, and truly just does it all, I think of my mom. She listens to the nonsense that my sisters and I spew, all while challenging us to look at situations from a different perspective. There really is something to be said about someone who never once complains when they may have every reason to, and this has impacted me more than I could have ever realized as I continue to grow and develop into my own version of a leader. Whether it is running an entire surgery day or taking out the trash, she has instilled in myself and those around her the importance of every task to the final outcome, no matter how small it may seem.Lightning Round wh ats your karaoke song?Rappers Delight by The Sugar Hill Gang (lyrics on screen not necessary).Lightning Round whats your favorite book?My Personal Best by John Wooden.Lightning Round whats your favorite movie?Remember the Titans.Lightning Round whats your favorite quote?Be where your feet are.Fairygodboss is all about celebrating female leaders so each week, we celebrate a young woman who is making a difference in her school or local community. Do you know a student leader whos making an impact? Celebrate her and thank her by nominating her here.
